Lew Carnahan

I was originally a patient of Dr. Lee at Healthy Smiles dental practice and had nothing but positive experiences with her. When I developed an abscessed tooth, Dr. Lee first referred me to her partner, Dr. Choi. I told Dr. Choi I wanted to save the tooth if possible and preferred a root canal to pulling the tooth. After a cursory exam he told me a root canal was out of the question, he was going to pull my tooth. I said I would like a second opinion and went back to Dr. Lee who then referred me to an Endodontist, Dr. Reeves, who specialized in root canals and had earlier finished a root canal for a family member that Dr. Choi had started and decided he couldn’t finish. Dr. Reeves performed the root canal promptly and painlessly and fitted me with a temporary cap. He then sent me back to Dr. Lee, explaining that because he depended on referrals from other dentists, it was important to let the referring dentist put the permanent cap on the tooth. But Dr. Lee had become disabled and was not currently practicing dentistry. The office then scheduled Dr. Choi to install the permanent cap. Preparatory to doing that, I had to see Dr. Choi’s nurse technician, who quizzed me on my tooth care over the years. I explained I brush morning and night with an electric toothbrush as well as using interdental brushes to clean between my teeth. At age 78 I still have all my own teeth. She proceeded to tell me I was not taking proper care of my teeth and that I had to floss my teeth at least twice a day, and she wanted me to PROMISE her I would comply. I told her I had tried flossing multiple times in the past, but could never make it a habit, so I wasn’t going to make a promise I knew I wouldn’t keep. If looks could kill I’d be dead. With a huff and an angry "well" she abruptly left the room. In a few minutes Dr. Choi entered and told me because I refused to comply with his technician’s request, he did not want me for a patient and would not be installing my crown. Thank goodness after I explained to Dr. Reeves staff what had happened, Dr. Reeves promptly installed the cap with no fuss. If I could give Dr. Choi negative stars, I happily would.

Dr. Choi was very condescending during my visit; he acted as if he would rather do anything but sit and look at my teeth for my two-minute appointment. Simply put, there are many other dentists who are less conceited and won't have you feeling disrespected when you leave their office.
