I took my two daughters in today to get haircuts- one a curly cut with layers and one just a trim with face framing. My daughter with straight hair went back first and finished last. She may have been given more instruction though. Her only complaint was that 2 different instructors were giving instructions and different instructions. That was a little of putting, but Her hair turned out nicely. A little shorter than she wanted but not by much. My daughter with curly hair didn’t have a good experience. We asked for someone that is familiar with curly hair and their girl assured me that she did. My daughter had already done her hair for the day so it was already styled with product in her hair. The girl started cutting before she even brushed it. Only when the instructor came over did she take her back to wash it. But then she blow dried and straightened it and didn’t take much of anything off. Even with her hair straightened she didn’t get it straight on the bottom (it’s ok she’s learning) she barely touched the layers and proceeded to keep straightening her hair. I asked her if we could see if wet since she has curly hair and wanted to see how it would look curly and she told me she didn’t know why I was saying it was curly because if I looked at it, it was straight- yes because she had just spent the entire time straightening it and not cutting it. I stepped away for maybe 10 minutes when she took her over to wash it to check on my other daughter and she I got back she had finished it and took us up to the front before the instructor came back over and by then, my daughter was distraught and didn’t want her to touch any more of her hair. We paid and had to directly call a salon to have it fixed. The $15 cut that I was trying ti save money on ended up costing me $110 in total. I don’t think we will try it again. Maybe if you aren’t concerned if your hair gets messed up; but definitely wouldn’t take teenage girls that are self conscious. (The picture is of her "straight" hair after taking it to Ulta to be fixed. It also doesn’t have any product in it in this. When she did her curly hair routine it’s a lot more curly than this. But referenced to show that it’s in-fact not straight)
Sophia was so sweet! I let her know I was super nervous to get my bob trimmed. My hair was uneven before I came in as well as layered, permed, bleached, and a grown own a line. She listened to all my concerns and gave me loads of information I didn’t know about in regards to taking better care of my hair. Extremely grateful! THANK YOU
I’ve been here a couple of times now for haircuts. My hair is more or less shoulder length, simply styled, and the cut has been consistently of really good quality. The stylists have paid attention to what they’re doing, and the cut turns out well. If you walk in, sometimes there is a wait, but not always. Prices are very attractive. Tips are cash only. Because this is a school / training institute environment, when a class graduates, that means your hairstylist will graduate, too, so don’t expect to have the same person cut your hair every time. They also offer offered hair colourings and perms. Haven’t done either yet.
I'm struggling with this review and I plus my family members all women has noticed and we have been going there since open. I, daughters, sisters have notice that it's not the same? We are use to seeing The Conductor " we call him that " not as much as before and a few things are lacking. Front desk which we miss the tall local guy this a while back nice guy w/beard. He hands the receipt with the name of us and right away we are attended too. Plus the area is tidy and scissors, clips, combs, h. brush, spray bottle, blow dryer, ect right there and clean. It's not like that and the radio is not loud. Otherwise their instructor, teacher, Ku'mu, maestro in the middle of cutting hair looks at the person w/radio and show his clippers in a cutting way making his point without a word. " I will cut the cord "! We are seeing the receipt taped to the mirror and the 1 who is assigned are still sitting talking stories w/ the other students. None of the implement are out, it's in their bag and was told to wash what she will use, still talking. Cutting hair it's good customer service to wipe away the fallen hair. It got it my eyes. The quality is not the same.
Absolutely loved my experience at the Hawaii Institute of Hair Design! Sophie achieved exactly the tone and movement I was looking for, with that effortless beachy vibe I love, full of shine and softness. Perfect layered cut with effortless waves – exactly the style I wanted and ready for a photoshoot. The salon is full of talent, with students and teachers working together, creating such an uplifting vibe. Highly recommend! 🌺✨
Let me start by saying I have been to barber schools in other cities around the world, so I knew what I signed up for walking in. Also nothing to the detriment of the student, who was definitely trying his best. That being said, the instructors should be way more involved. In other schools, the instructors step in at the end to make sure the haircut is up to par. Here, the student was about to send me home with an unfinished haircut, if I hadn't asked him to call a supervisor, who then proceeded to finish the job. The cut (a normal haircut) took almost 1,5h in total, partly because his clipper kept dying, even when connected to the charger. All in all, not worth the trouble.
NEED AN OUTSTANDING LOOK FOR THE LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE WOOD SNAKE? Get your hair cut and celebrate immediately afterwards in Chinatown. Your date with destiny are activities culminating on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Do you need a clean, sharp, contemporary "cutting edge" look at a great price for a special occasion? Then, look no further. YOU and your family have a tested and tried strong recommendation from a long-time patron (that would be me). Calling all men, women, children and grandparents who need to look their very best. And, you urgently need a good, inexpensive haircut? Then, stop your frantic search. Help is literally right around the corner. I personally believe, that the Hawaii Institute Of Hair Design is the barber for YOU for all your needs!!! Come test their limits. They are at 1128 Nuuanu Street between North Hotel (Makai) and North Pauahi (Mauka) Streets near downtown and Chinatown. Come on down. They'll immediately take care of YOU and your family's haircut needs. Okay, so please hear me out on this resulting, exciting scenario. This is my personal perspective about this win-win outcome. You walk in for a "cut-rate" customized haircut to your liking. In the process, YOU directly help an aspiring barber or hairdresser become masters of their trade. At the same time, YOU walk out of there with a sharper, clean-cut, cutting edge contemporary look. How is that for a truly winning proposition all the way around. I sincerely think so. Get a "priceless" look for ONLY around $10. Haircuts start at $10 for a basic going over and "lowering your ears." Give them your business. I believe you'll love their Aloha service and hair cutting, trimming, washing techniques. Check them out. Now, here are some thoughts for your consideration. Once you are downtown for your haircut on Nuuanu Avenue, there, are a range of places to visit afterwards (all within walking distance) with your family and / or friends. Check out Chinatown. There are GREAT Chinese restaurants nearby. And, of course, you have the Chinatown farmer's markets all within reach. So, consider several activities around your downtown haircut. Here is an exciting wrinkle along with a twist for your plans. Why not patronize the Original Pancake House in Waiakamilo Shopping Center either BEFORE or AFTER your haircut? You can visit my "Waiakamilo Shopping Center" and "the Original Pancake House" posts for these details. Thank you. Ideas, ideas, ideas. I've been their loyal customer over the many years. A former adjunct professor in College of Business Administration faculty, at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), they were conveniently located right around the corner for me. This year is now approximately my 25th year of patronage. I started when they were located on North Hotel Street many years ago. That's for the history books. They've been around. See YOU soon at the Hawaii Institute.of Hair Design.
