I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this place! I adopted an elder daschund Mr Bailey back in 2016 and it was a great experience. Took a minute but we got him all taken care of and he got a good home. He has since passed and I regularly drop off donated items for the shelter. & you should too! If you’re looking to adopt or volunteer i highly recommend this place. They are underrated and organized. Thank you HHHS! ✨🤍✌🏽
I tried to give a dog I adopted a chance, but he's being aggressive towards my kids, and they were not helpful at all, and do not care about the safety of the dog, or the family. Meet and greet went well, so we chose to bring him home, but since bringing him home, he hasn't been adjusting well, even after giving him everything. My kids know how to handle dogs, but he is a danger. Keep in mind, I let them know when I called to take him back, he's being aggressive towards my children. They still said, "few days" no... I do not trust this dog in my house. "Sorry, Sunday is the best we can do" it's Thursday.
I haven’t adopted here, but I visit here every time I go to Topeka. I just want to say thank you guys for encouraging adoption, the cleanliness of the facility, ALL of the information you provide on the pets (personality, breed, etc.), and ensuring that animals are spayed and neutered and vaccinated. I live where these standards are not quite met at our local shelter, so it gives me optimism that you put the most effort and care into what you do. When the time comes to adopt, I will be back in here!
We adopted a special needs lil guy in 2021 He just turned 6 years old in November 2025 .Best thing to Ever Happen to our family. Facultie was nice and clean the animals looked like the staff actually take good care of them. And they r really nice. Thank you for my fur.babie
We like to go into the shelter to see the animals and to see if any of them are older. We found a dog we wanted to meet not necessarily adopt. We wanted to see if he would fit into our family first. Our place of residency is in Montana but we have a condo here. We filled out the paperwork thinking we would get to meet the dog but was told we couldn't because they couldn't confirm the condos rules about animals. We get that , but we just wanted to meet the dog. If we were to go to the pet store we could first meet and interact with the animal before getting it. We always get our animals from rescue places even our first dog which we got from the humane shelter when it was in North Topeka. With this policy that you have in place now, we will NOT adopt from here. FYI, the dog would have gone to our home in Montana with us if we would have been able to interact with him. Dukes loss
Let’s start with some back story, my sister and I own a home. We are grown successful adults. We were looking for a companion for . our dog. We did not bring our dog. We were treated extremely poorly. We were ignored, when we were trying to buy stuff for our dog at home, we had to go and find the lady who was just talking to her co workers about random stuff when she knew we were at the front trying to pay. Because she saw us as she walked off. When we found a dog we wanted to see we didn’t know the name all we remembered was it was part Great Dane, the lady kept denying there was a Great Dane dog even though the papers said he was. Making us look absolutely insane. The dog was there!!! We were at the desk with the adoption paperwork filled out my sister wrote she owned the house (it’s under my name but the dog was for the family) and the lady looked up the address to see the owners questioned my name to see if it matched the records. Then questioned if we owned the house??? As if we liars made us feel extremely uncomfortable!! We miss heard the lady and thought she said the dog howls 24/7, and I said did you say howl because then it would be a problem ( if a dog has notes on it saying it howls 24/7 it has to have problems) she said that’s not what she said and we laughed it off, but then got lectured that it was normal for a dog to howl and how we should feel bad for the dog because it was surrendered twice we got lectured for an uncomfortable amount. Mind you we understand dogs make noises We met the dog, he was very anxious and didn’t want to be bothered, I understand he’s stressed . But then the lady asked what we think of him within a minute of him being in there. Mind you the dog didn’t even let us touch him and was crying to leave. We said um he didn’t even let us touch him or get near us. Then we got lectured again about patience ( for an uncomfortable amount of time)
Great staff, very caring, clean, affordable & know how to take care of animals and on time. Ty for doing a wonderful job on my 3 kittens spay & neuter. God Bless you all including the pets
