The Bird House Salon - Gowanus

I am always so happy to see Crystal Manrique. They've been doing my hair for the past 4 years and is quite literally one of my favorite people in the world. Color work? unmatched. haircuts? gorgeous. Personality? Like a warm hug. I love getting my hair done by Crystal, they are the best. (photos from the gorgeous color work/cut for my wedding).

Rachel at Bird House is, hands down, the best curly hairstylist in Brooklyn--- though I am certain she can transform any hair type. I have some real challenges with my hair and whenever I see Rachel I can tell that she is being attentive to not only how I want my cut to look and feel but also to how it will grow out in a healthy way. I always walk away from the salon feeling wonderful and really well cared for. Also, I love this location--- it is like a secret oasis. It is clean and serene, all of the folks who work there are super friendly and professional.

After a not-so-great salon experience where I walked in asking for one color and left with the complete opposite, I knew it was time to find a new stylist. I came across Crystal on Instagram and was immediately drawn to her work. Her specialization in darker hair colors stood out to me right away, something that’s surprisingly hard to find. As a fellow Latina, there was an instant sense of trust and understanding in how she approaches hair. Choosing Crystal was one of the best decisions I’ve made for both my hair and my confidence. She is not only incredibly talented but also warm, personable, and genuinely attentive. She always takes the time to listen, collaborate, and make sure you leave with exactly what you envisioned. Over time, I’ve built a real bond with her and have complete trust knowing my hair is in her hands. If you’re looking for rich dark color or even something more playful and fun, I can’t recommend Crystal enough. I’d also love to shout out the entire team at The Bird House. The front desk receptionists are beyond pleasant and handle every interaction with so much poise and care. The interns who assist with shampooing are equally kind and attentive, making the experience feel welcoming and thoughtful from start to finish.

As a transplant from LA, it took me awhile to find a salon in NYC that does blonde well, and understands the nuance between all the blonde shades and blending techniques (i feel like most nyc salons just give everyone an all-over icy blonde??) The staff is friendly and helpful, Katelyn and Chelsea are wonderful with color and cuts, and give thoughtful product referrals tailored to your hair. Going to a new stylist is very stressful for me (I’ve always been anxious about haircuts) so I’m grateful to have found a new place I feel comfortable with while in NYC!

I went to Alyssa for a haircut and she did an excellent job! She listened to me and took into account my photos and what was best for my hair. I highly recommend and will be back! Also the head massage at the shampoo bar was otherworldly, not even kidding.

I first went to Erin at The Bird House in June for a transformational cut - waist length hair to a bob! I told her in the thorough consult that I might cry - not because of her but because of the emotional baggage my hair held. Erin was so supportive I did not cry, I actually beamed the whole time. Been back for maitenence cuts with her every few months since then and the consistency and care is incredible. Highly recommend!

The Bird House is an elite salon. Clean, friendly and warm with talented stylists and great music. I go to Crystal and I'd trust them with my life. I prefer vivid fantasy colors and bold styles and Crystal always completely understands my vision, and not only points me in the most stylish direction, but chooses the one healthiest for my hair (hello bleach magician). Crystal has become a dear friend, and as someone who spends hours in the chair each session, I truly look forward to my appointments <3
