Overall great experience. I was looking for snacks I had as a kid, didn't find them but got close and also got to explore the store a lot as a result. Prices are good, sachima I got for $5 which is amazing. There's a ton of snacks if you're into Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese snacks etc. The aisles are a bit narrow and you have to do some guesswork about what's where, but that's just because the store is so jam-packed with stuff. The rice is cheaper in other stores, but I imagine there's nicer brands of rice here and it's not a big price difference ($31 instead of $28 for 25lbs of rice). Some things are cheaper at Aldi's but it's pretty difficult to compare overall. Vegetables and meat here though are super cheap. They offer a lot of cuts you don't see in other supermarkets, and those cuts are cheaper than anything I've ever seen in another store. Probably the best deals are the fish. Vegetables are also cheap, in these massive bags. That's one sort of con, is the smallest bag of bok choy(Shanghainese tips) was still far too much for just me, so I had to give some away to friends 😂. But it was still a cheap price. Edit: they've since reorganized so the aisles are wider and everything is organized more intuitively, love you guys 🫶
Please read the entire review. This market while it has an immense variety of products suffers from two major flaws in my own personal opinion. First, cleanliness, the moment you walk through the doors there’s a foul smell of raw protein and is very off putting. The store feels/seems dirty. Second, for non Asian customers, there’s little to no signage, difficult to make an informed purchase. I know this review may be perceived as petty or borderline Karen optics. But if you have ever shopped at a Japanese or Korean Market you will understand exactly what I mean and where I’m coming from. Visit any H-Mart in NY or NJ. Or Maruichi in West Hartford CT and you’ll know what I mean. Tho my low review, I still shop here from time to time for the exotic fruits (pricey) but I’d be remiss to not state the obvious. Don’t take my word for it, give it a try.
A Dong Asian Supermarket is a fascinating and massive store that is a haven for lovers of Asian cuisine. If you're confident in your cooking skills and don't need any hand-holding while shopping, this place is perfect for you. The variety of produce, sauces, noodles, ramen, sweets, cookware, and more is impressive, and the prices won't leave you feeling like you just sold a kidney. The store is decently organized and clean, so you won't have to wade through piles of discarded packaging to find what you need. However, don't expect any frills or pleasantries from the staff - they're not exactly falling over themselves to assist you. But if you're just looking to grab some quality Asian staples and get on with your day, A Dong Asian Supermarket is definitely worth a visit.
This was my first time here. This store is huge! It has an enormous produce section and many different items from Asian countries that you wouldn't find in other Asian markets. I only went through half of the store briefly because someone was waiting for me. So I plan to go back and give a full description. From what I saw I was very impressed!! Definitely recommend checking out.
A DONG SUPERMARKET for FRESH HERBS - basil, mint, and more - flavors favored in Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, & Thai authentic dishes. 'abundant quantities here. Enjoy specialty teas & sweets at CHA PAPI a few steps away after restocking other hard-to-find Asian ingredients - Chinese, Japanese, Korean too. ‘ just a short distance from West Hartford, CT I84 traveling to and from New England. This place would be a 5 if it weren’t for the smell. Aisles are well organized. Nothing is really cluttered. Staff could be friendlier… but I could also say that about any Asian market
We went to get fish. Heard they have a Katla(Bengali name) but we were unfortunate. Reasonable price for fishes. It’s a Chinese shops and most of the people working in the shop doesn’t understand English well. Average experience. You can have vegetables and other household items too. Pretty big shop.
