Lucky Supermarket

I shop at this store every week because the employees are accommodating and friendly. The prices and selection of product are excellent. I used to work at a Supermarket during high school, so I know how difficult this job can be. I want to shout out to the Deli Department and specifically Nyla who went out of her way today to help me with a special order. She is friendly and professional. She is an asset to this store. She deserves a raise. Nyla and others at this store are why I continue to come back and support this store

Left some of my order behind in the cart. Duh. Returned the next day with a receipt. They checked the video. Sure enough, I left it in the cart. Missing items fully and cheerfully replaced. Thank you.

EDIT: They no longer carry the home made tortilla chips here. What they are selling is cheap box chips bagged up in the same cellophane bags with a "made fresh" sticker on them. I guess they’re "made fresh" somewhere else, but they for sure aren’t frying them in the deli like they used to. For tortilla chip aficionados , the texture is not a very thin Tex mex chip, but something akin to a mission brand chip. They also changed the fresh baked bread recipe and it tastes cheaper, and less yeasty. It used to be the perfect bread for making Italian sandwiches & garlic toast. In any case, the two stars instead of five are less about the chips & bread, and more about the principle. It really seems like you get less, for more money, these days. And if you take a look at my photos, the price actually went up for the new cheaper chips. The old homemade chips were $3.49 with a sticker that said "made fresh in store, and the new "made fresh" ones are $3.99. I didn’t know that Luckys needed to shave costs on their "made fresh" products and then charge more for them, to stay afloat. Why there? Why do it at all. Why not keep a good thing and just charge more if it costs more to make? People pay for things they like. What they want is honesty and quality, even if it means it costs a little more. And I don’t mean the "supply chain" gouging I believe Safeway has been doing post covid. In any case, I have stopped shopping at this Luckys (which used to be once a week, even though their prices for certain items were higher than bigger grocery chains) since they did this with the chips and bread. Who knows where else they cut corners? I find this kind of thing to be extremely dishonest. I’m sad to see a place I love turn like this- little lies like a "made fresh" sticker with ("in store" omitted) on chips they are clearly not frying in the deli says a lot. It was calculated trickery. Maybe you don’t personally care, but I’m seeing too much of this behavior lately from stores and products alike. One customer loss may not matter all that much, but my vote is a "no" here. The devil is in the details, a lie is a lie- and represents a bigger truth. *I have also updated the photos so you can see the difference between their actual home made chips, and the new ones they put the sticker on. PREVIOUS REVIEW: Love this store! They sell the best home made tortilla chips you can buy- thin and crispy - texmex style. It is the primary reason I shop here. For everything else, they carry pretty much anything you can find at Safeway and price competitively…one thing cool is that Luckys reminds me of the grocery stores of yesteryear - or the one in the 90s, albeit slightly updated (not as much as Safeway/vons). I really enjoy walking around in this place and I feel that the organization is intuitive. Was able to find everything right away. Anyways, come here for the chips- trust me. The only other place that has chips like this (that is not in Texas) is the little taqueria on Piedmont called BAJA.

Constantly watched as soon as I walked in from Black woman staff. Later, security was called to "watch the isles" over the intercom. Didn’t think anything of it. Got to self checkout and was watched as I scanned items. Was security for me? Was told, not addressed, that the bananas were organic and not regular—that’s fine, but when I needed help with an item that wasn’t scanning, no help was given. Guess security was for me. No explanation or contact made prior to then. Just an unpleasant experience being profiled.

There is a Lucky's Market ilocated in Montclair, Oakland. It has three parking lots: one out front; one underneath; and one on top of the store. You can almost always find a parking spot at Lucky's. They are open from 6-10—which makes it very convenient! Lucky's has a weekly flier that is worth looking to see what their best deals are for the week They have a meat and fish counter—where the "butcher" can get you what you want. (They aren't like the old fashioned butchers that can make special cuts for you—but they still can weigh things out for you). Also, you can smell fish before you buy—which I really like. They have a bakery, and a deli. You can get a sandwich freshly made, or a newly baked cake. They have a liquor department; a floral department; and a relatively large selection of produce. In the middle of the store, there are all those things we come to expect when we go into a large grocery store. What I like about Lucky's—is they have almost everything.

Thank you to the best bakery manager @ lucky Jasmine has been making my kids birthday cakes for 8 years and every single time we are blown away with the care and artistry that you put in every cakes. Thank you so much.

I asked for help at the self checkout. The woman in the photo walked away from me the first time I asked. The next time she just straight up ignored me. I asked her what her name was and she would not give it. I was just trying to scan some lemons but she was obviously there to collect a pay check, NOT to do her job.
