Dr. Krell represents two of that qualities I want most in a doctor/PA: he is both professional and personable. He makes you feel comfortable and listens and communicates effectively. More important, Dr. Krell's thorough exams and attention to detail helped save my life twice by locating and treating melanoma in its early stages.

If you have a serious case of psoriasis and you’ve tried everything and you feel like there is no hope… find Dr James Krell in Birmingham Alabama. He has been my doctor for 25+ years. I’ve traveled back to see him when i lived in other states and in Europe? Why? Because out of the numerous dermatologists I had seen, he was the only doctor that was committed to listening to me, studying my whole case and finding treatments that made me able to live a normal life. It sounds kind of silly to say a dermatologist saved my life, but if you’ve suffered with severe psoriasis, you understand exactly what I mean. Severe Psoriasis takes an immense toll on your quality of life and your mental state. Psoriasis is not likely to kill you, but it can make you wish you could die. It’s painful, it’s maddening and makes you feel deep shame and embarrassment. Sometimes Dr Krell appears to get a little embarrassed when I have said it to him, to his residents and when I’ve run into him in public and chosen to reveal to someone else that he is my doctor and he has saved my life and allowed me to live like a "normal" person. But it’s the truth. I’ve had 25+ years to think about it. Not gonna lie, some of the earlier treatments were pretty intense and could have even been dangerous, BUT he told me that and helped me understand side effects and fully respected my choices regarding my treatment. There were very few surprises- he knew the possible side effects and made sure that I understood them. I chose to take certain treatments because he supplied me with literature and information from studies explaining everything doctors could know about that treatment, at that time. When I asked questions, he listened and answered. No sugar coating from Krell. He did his very best to always give me all the info, give me his recommendations and then let me make the best choice for myself. I always went with his recommendations, but it’s important to understand risks with new medications and treatments. He made sure I did. Furthermore, he has spent much of his career highly focused on psoriasis causes, treatments and management. He LOVES this stuff! Another thing, from my first visits my health insurance companies have tried to call my psoriasis "cosmetic" it’s not cosmetic for me and this doctor has actually fought my insurance companies to get me the help I’ve needed. And I mean he really fought them. I saw some of his letters in my medical file and insurance companies also showed them to me. He wasn’t playing. These weren’t form letters these were letters where he really went to bat for my care. I suffered for years, but I’m currently clear of psoriasis. I’m not "cured" there’s not a cure. But I cherish every moment that I’ve been able to live like a normal person. Meaning, not bleeding through my clothes, not being able to sleep because I itched like fire and dig holes into my skin, not being able to wear a simple t shirt in public because I bled through it and my open sores were visible to all. in case you’re unaware that’s kind of frightening to the general public. People do things like pull They’re kids away from you. I don’t really blame them but it hurts to feel like a monster mentally and it’s painful to be covered in lesions and plaques because you’ve scratched holes in your skin trying to relieve the itching. Anyway, if you have moderate to severe psoriasis, please get in touch with him. If he has no openings, ask his nurse to ask him to recommend one of his former residents who is now a full fledged doctor. I could sing his praises all day long, he’s done so much to help me. However, I’ll close with- there’s hope and there are treatments, don’t give up - find Dr James Krell in Birmingham Alabama at Total Skin and Beauty. If anyone can help you, it’s him.

No nonsense and extremely personable. He wastes no time but his efficiency doesn’t preclude answering questions. He has treated me for poison ivy and basal cell carcinoma. His caring attitude is the same regardless of the severity of my issue. Experience, confidence, and a great sense of humor. Highly recommend.

Worst bedside manner of any doctor I've ever seen, and at my age and health history, I've seen plenty. He came in and started lecturing about the treatment he favors and it was clearly his way or the highway. After his long spiel he said, and I quote, "I've spent a lot of time with you and I'm not going to answer a long list of questions." 😮 Then he reluctantly answered five very simple questions (like how often to moisturize for my condition, am I using too much cortisone) that I had taken the time and trouble to print, along with the brief history of my condition, because most doctors appreciate that kind of preparation and communication. I'll never go back!
