I’ve been coming to this dental office since I was a child and have always had positive experiences—until recently. At my latest visit, I checked in as usual and provided my insurance information before being taken back for my cleaning. When I was leaving, I was unexpectedly charged for half of the cleaning because the finance representative was not available to process my insurance at that time. I wish this had been communicated to me before my appointment began. After the claim was filed, I learned that I still owed a balance—even after paying a significant portion upfront. This was when I found out that my insurance is now considered out-of-network. At no point prior to my appointment was this disclosed to me. I believe this is important information that should have been clearly communicated before services were rendered. As someone who has been a loyal patient for many years, I would have appreciated transparency and a simple heads-up regarding the insurance change. Unfortunately, this experience has left me disappointed, and I will not be returning.
This is one of the few medical offices where I immediately felt at ease—and that’s not accidental. Germantown Dental Group is exceptionally well run: friendly, professional staff, minimal wait times, and a calm, organized environment that respects your time. Dr. John Whittemore takes the time to explain what he’s doing and why it matters, which is increasingly rare. You never feel rushed or sold to—just informed. That level of clarity and confidence builds trust quickly. The team works seamlessly, the technology is clearly modern, and the entire experience feels intentional rather than chaotic. This is not a volume-driven dental office—it’s a quality-driven one. If you’re looking for a high-quality dental practice anywhere in the Memphis and Shelby County area, this office earns its reputation. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
The most loving staff and atmosphere. They treat you like family here. I don’t feel like I am walking in to the dentist office, it’s like being greeted by your friends you haven’t seen in a while every time I go in for a cleaning. Dr. Gruen is AMAZING. He takes time to explain things to you, truly cares about you, is incredibly detailed and informative, and kind. He also cured my TMJ with a custom mouth guard. I have my life back now! Beyond the friendliness of the staff, they also have superior dental technology and specialists for what you need. I love Germantown Dental Group. If you’re looking for a dentist, go see Dr. Gruen. Eva will answer all your questions about insurance and billing, and really knows her stuff. Lauren will make you feel like you’re not even there to get your teeth cleaned as she treats you like a friend while she talks to you during the cleaning. Next thing you know the unfun part about the dentist is over! I am so happy to be a patient here. Oh - and there’s literally no wait time. Most efficiently run doctor’s office I’ve ever experienced. Plus they have cool magnet chip clips you can get on your way out!
I have never had a root canal and absolutely terrified of the numbing needle. My experience with Dr. Klecker was so amazing. Absolutely no pain at all. He has all the latest equipment to keep your mouth open providing the most comfortable experience ever. He truly is the best. I just wished he did more than root canal. Believe me I've been to the best in Chicago and California, Dr Klecker is a 12 out of 10
Friendly, helpful staff, as always. Lauren did a very thorough job of examining and cleaning my teeth, including monitoring some potential issues that may eventually require fixing. Very professional all around.
I am new in Memphis from 7/2024. I had lost my periodontal and dental support in Kansas City during the pandemic and was spiraling out of control. Lisa has taken great care of me. Lauren was great today. Dr. Whittemore will call you and check on you after any major/painful procedure. What I like about this clinic is that they are all in one. I can get dental and periodontal care from people who know what they are doing. Nothing is worse than sitting in a dental chair knowing someone is half ass cleaning your teeth when you have periodontal issues. The girls are cross trained periodontal and will provide a deeper cleaning than an average dental office. This is a huge deal and has me coming back to this office even though my insurance is out of network. They do their best to cut me deals where they think it makes sense. This office is also very sensitive to pain you are feeling and strives to support that where they can. Highly recommend I have been satisfied with my care and my mouth has returned to reasonable health for me.
Dr. Whittemore’s second opinion saved my husband from 4 unnecessary fillings recommended by another office in Germantown which shall remain nameless. (I will say, the bad office is a chain and not a private practice. We chose them because they were in-network with our insurance. I now know this is the wrong way to choose a dentist.) After a first exam at that other place, they told my husband he had "active decay" on 4 teeth and that he would need hundreds of dollars in fillings. We immediately felt this was absurd because he has never had a cavity in his life. For a tiny sum of money, Dr. Whittamore had a look and said, "Yeah, I wouldn’t do any of that." We immediately booked appointments for me and our young adult sons. My youngest son went in today, and he was treated so well. The assistant we saw when we went to my husband’s appointment stopped in the lobby and called me by name to say she was so glad to see us back. I couldn’t believe she remembered my name. How kind. As is all of the staff. As long as we are in Shelby County, we will go nowhere else. We will pay more upfront because this office is out of network with our insurance, but what will we save in the long run by not paying for unnecessary procedures over time? Also, we will save our teeth from unnecessary drilling and from fillings that must be replaced every 5-15 years. Every time they have to drill to replace a filling, you lose more tooth until eventually, you need crowns or lose the tooth completely. Look at what we’re saving by spending a few extra hundred dollars now. Money and teeth. I understand the financial part of it all, but do all you can to see Dr. Whittemore. You can tell he loves people and his craft. The extra out-of-pocket cost is worth it! How jovial can a dental office be? How relaxing? How friendly? I call this office "The Happy Place." Thank you, Germantown Dental Group! We will be seeing you again soon!
