The most amazing Japanese bookstore! Omg I wish we had one in Florida. Spent 3 hours walking through the aisles of this 3 story book store. Keep in mind that going from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor there is no escalator even though there is one to go upstairs. Well organized with Japanese books, super clean. There is a mini café on thr 3rd floor that sells snacks and coffee; you must have your items paid for before going into the café. The basement is filled with cute little stationaries and magazines. Its a must visit when in NY
I really love this store. There are a lot of books, manga, anime merch, studio Ghibli merch, stationary and everything Japanese. There are also a lot of blind boxes with collectibles. There’s also a small café like section upstairs. Though the line was kind of long, it was worth it. 👍🏻
((4.5 stars)) Kinokuniya Bookstore can be found right across the street from Bryant Park on Sixth Avenue. the multi-floor store contains Japanese-centric books, manga, collectibles, writing/drawing stuff, and more...plus there's a cafe on the top floor. the store is fairly large and really maintained / organized, but it is full of merchandise which can make it feel cramped when foot traffic is high. while being a Japanese bookstore, the ground level has a good amount of Japanese novels, other types of books, etc., there are still a fair amount of non-Japanese books on this floor. the top floor contains the cafe area as well as manga and collectibles (figures, toys, statues, etc.). the manga selection is pretty wide, but you can find genres in manga that you probably wouldn't find at chain bookstores. had some q's about some manga series bc i was buying a series of gifts...and the staff was very helpful with suggestions. the bottom floor (below street level) is where you can find Japanese stationery, drawing related items, a lot of Studio Ghibli merchandise (plushies, puzzles, and more), and knickknacks. if you have friends or family who are Japanese-culture-philes, then this store is your one-stop-shop for finding great gifts for even the pickiest of recipients. staff here are helpful and patient. lines at checkout move quickly. the store is always busy bc it is filled with tourists, passerby's, locals, and people who are killing time before heading to Bryant Park or who have just left the park. if you are a bibliophile then this is a must for you!
Insane variety of stationary, books, and merchandise in one place. More organized and larger in stock than some Japanese book/merch stores, even! My only gripe is that the prices are over double what it would be originally (ex. $30 for a ¥1800 magazine), but I suppose it accounts for import and shipping costs. Makes Japanese goods accessible for people who can’t go abroad!
i genuinely love this bookstore sooo much. such a great place to hang out with friends and view the books and mangas together. i loved the basement where they had the studio ghibli section, so cute!!
You don't have to be Japanese to visit and love this store but being able to read the Japanese language does help if you want to understand a fair amount of the words that are written on many of the products. Maybe it's just me , but I want more Godzilla products. I think if they have a huge Totoro, they should also have a huge Godzilla as well and stage a battle between them and hire me to do the cinematography. Also, beware, everything is super cute and you could get a case of cuteness aggression.
My friend showed me this place when I visited NYC. It has a lot of manga (in both Japanese and English), Japanese stationary, and much more. I had a lot of fun there exploring what they have. Highly recommend if you are into Japanese culture
