John K. King Books North

John K King Books is a staple in Detroit. Any time I have friends or family visiting, I make sure to bring them to one of their locations. The books are affordable and I always find something interesting there. An added bonus is that the dog, Casper is very sweet and does a good job.

Great collection of books. And I don't know her name, but she's your employee who writes horror. Cute girl with the Goth vibes, pretty eyes, and shy smile. I'm a writer, myself, and I enjoyed spending my time talking to her.

I went into John King in search of some older texts and was immediately disgusted by the service I received. The gentleman who seems to be some kind of manager treats people in a disgusting manner. He hassled the woman checking out before me, asking whether she had returned a book to the shelf. She had and was perfectly pleasant. While it would be irritating if she hadn’t, the way he hassled her was disgusting. He then helped me. He warned me that the side of a book was fragile. The minute he handed it to me, the side fell off (it had been broken before). "See? I told you to be careful with it." I told him it was already broken, to which he sighed and raised his voice: "No it wasn’t!" John K. King is a Detroit treasure, and the Ferndale location is a convenient gem. I would not go in if this guy is still there. Rather than respect the dedicated customers who, instead of buying off Amazon, choose to support what is otherwise a really cool business, this gentleman was rude to the customer before me, rude to me, rude to an elderly customer, and rude to the other female employee. Beyond disgusting.

John King lives up to the hype and It's a great way to spend a lazy saturday. There are soooo many rare and interesting books. Check out their main location to. You won't be disappointed!

Ugh. As an avid reader and book lover... I wanted to love this place. But, the smell. Was. Awful. They do however have many, books. Lots of what I would consider random used books. Rare and antique like books. Some are visably disinegrating on the shelves, with notes to patrons that touching will leave residue on your hands. It was interesting walking around in there for a bit.

Excellent selection and friendly staff! I was able to browse quietly on my own for a while, and the person at the desk held on to my picks as I looked around. Books are fairly priced for their condition, and there's a dream find for every person somewhere on these shelves. Very happy with my visit!

What an awful experience. BRADY was unbelievably rude! Not that my selection of books was the greatest to sell, but his attitude was terrible. Snide and so condescending! Wish I would have gone downtown. 😥
