California Welcome Center Salinas

The California Welcome Center in Salinas far exceeded every expectation — and Craig deserves special recognition! From the moment I walked in, he was incredibly friendly, engaging, and genuinely excited to share the best of the region. His knowledge of local history, hidden gems, and scenic routes is exceptional, and he took the time to personalize recommendations based on what I love to explore. The center itself is wonderful — beautifully designed with exhibits and historical displays that are honestly better than some local museums and historical societies I’ve visited. It’s the kind of place where you come in for a quick brochure and end up staying because there’s so much to see and learn. If you’re traveling through Salinas or heading toward Monterey, Big Sur, or the Central Coast, this should be your very first stop. And if you’re lucky enough to be greeted by Craig, you’ll walk out with tons of inspiration and a newfound appreciation for the area. Highly, highly recommend!

The CA Welcome Center in Salinas has nice exhibits with a lot of local history. I didn't realize how much Southern Pacific Railroad did to promote the area and contribute to the agricultural and tourism industries. I expect we'll visit here again.

What an amazing find! After tea at the Steinbeck House, we were going to the train station to see the WPA-era murals and just happened to see the Welcome Center flags. The next two hours were spent in the company of Craig, who gave us a fantastic tour of the very well designed and beautiful museum, detailing "The Story of How Southern Pacific Company Created the Salad Bowl of the World." We learned so much about the area and its history; it was fascinating. We will certainly head back to Salinas to see and learn more about the area! It’s more than just gorgeous farmland.

This is an amazing little museum filled with Salinas Valley history! Craig was so helpful and told us some amazing facts. You could spend potentially hours there reading everything. A must see if you are a local! 📜

Try to go there while waiting for your ride. It’s a bit hidden but once you step in, this well-mannered gentleman greets you. He will share trivia bits as he is very passionate about Salinas. The only sad part is the store doea not accept cards 🙁

The Welcome Center is conveniently located at the train station and within walking distance of Downtown Salinas and the transit center. There are great exhibits about Salinas Valley history. There are books for sale and lots of brochures about nearby attractions.
