I'm sure it's a decent school but my experiences here have been nothing but horrible. The offices are incompetent and very unhelpful. They couldn't answer a single yes or no question in person, email or phone. Dorm living is awful, from loud people, RAs that clearly don't care and are rude to rooms that break down every week and take 3 weeks to fix. I'm so glad I'm leaving this place, if you aren't from the valley and are out of town DO NOT COME HERE
Just got accepted for fall module II. Tried getting a hold of my assigned advisor for 3 weeks by phone and email. After 3 weeks of calling everyone in the grad dept, calling all the help numbers, and still not getting any help, I got a hold of the dean's office, to find out that my advisor was out with no timeline of coming back. Apparently there was no one in place to catch the students assigned to Linda Acevedo, so if I hadn't persistently called in and emailed, nothing would have happened. I still don't have my degree plan, no advising on what courses to register for, no advice on financial aid, and my classes start in 9 days.
UTRTV is an expanding University with a variety of majors available. University also has a branch located in Brownsville Texas. Edinburg location is large so make sure you have your google Maps readily available to navigate the campus if you’re new.
Never do a PhD in pure or applied math at the UTRGV. They put too many ambiguous requirements, treat you like you are an idiot among geniuses, who are, in fact, far not, and too picky grading for a no-value degree. Low jobs market, very low pay and almost never demanded in practice.
I visited the gym and I was impressed by the cleanliness and order. The only thing missing was the friendly and smiling staff at the entrance.
Butterflies love this place, it's a also a great place for students to further their education.
They never have weekend classes, and evening classes are rare or non-existent. College activities, events, and classes cater to recent HS grads without a job. If you are a working adult with other responsibilities aside from school, this isn't a good college for you. I've had to skip entire semesters because all their classes are in the AM times, M-F, or be held back. After all, I need a prerequisite for several classes that is only available during normal working hours. Online courses are ok, in person classes are good. The financial aid department doesn't know anything, and they either say "we'll get back to you" and never do, or "you can find that information yourself online," or "send an email" that they never reply to. Not helpful at all. The dean's office never replies to emails. I've sent 3, for 3 different occasions, and never got a reply. There are a couple good teachers that I appreciated, but those are few and far in between. Parking is horrendous, If you aren't there at least an hour before class starts you wont find a parking. I've heard a professor talking about the job, asking students to apply as an instructor because it was "easy". He literally said "you start the semester with 200 students and you end with 30..." Most of the teachers really don't care, they are just their for a paycheck. I don't know how many times I get an exam with questions from the next months chapters or with stuff we never cover. They don't care and they don't take accountability.
