Japanese Head Spa By MJ Salon

Having experienced numerous Asian Head Spas over the years, I can confidently say this was the worst I have ever encountered. The establishment's claim to be a head spa is frankly disingenuous. Three of us were on a girls' weekend trip to San Diego, and we were assured she could accommodate all of us. Upon arrival, red flag #1, seeing only her, I specifically asked again if we would each have our own masseuse, and she confirmed we would. We then proceeded with the services. Shortly after, one additional person arrived to assist. They began with a scalp check and a face mask application. What followed was a disorienting experience, as it felt like the two staff members alternated between the three of us. This often left one of us unattended for significant periods, with either wet hair, shampoo lingering, or water running to create the impression of ongoing service. I anticipated a proper massage, which is typically the highlight of a head spa experience, but none was provided. Essentially, we paid over $100 each for a very basic hair wash, something I could have easily done myself. She asserted that she had extensive experience and training in Japan, but the quality of service suggested otherwise. I have received far superior services for less cost in other cities. After the hair wash, we all discussed our experiences and realized that none of us had received much focused attention. We had each presumed the others were getting more care due to the alternating service, but it became clear that dedicated time was lacking for everyone. And to think, the cleanliness of switching between the 3 of us. Who knows if they used the same tools on us or not. I strongly advise against visiting this establishment if you are seeking a genuine, full-service Asian Head Spa. As a comparison, the following day we visited another spa where we received a 90-minute foot reflexology and half-body massage combo for only $80. That service included significantly more head and shoulder massage than the place specifically marketed as a head spa. I regret not checking Yelp reviews beforehand; that oversight is my responsibility. Furthermore, my inclination to avoid confrontation led me to pay for what was essentially just a hair wash. This particular experience was a significant disappointment during my San Diego trip, as I felt we were completely overcharged and misled. It was a valuable, albeit frustrating, lesson. FYI, read up on the Yelp reviews also. I'm not sure why she has such a high rating on here. She requested us to just write a google review, and not yelp. Another red flag. 🙁

I booked my sister and myself for a combo #4 for her birthday. I called the day before and they were very helpful and let me book us both together and made sure I knew about the specials they had happening. The scalp treatment and massage were both very relaxing and my hair feels much lighter and cleaner. The staff were also very kind and did a great job. Would definitely recommend!

Never did a head spa before so didn't know what to expect. The workers were very nice and they started by showing me a close up of my scalp before and it was definitely oilier and less clean. They gave me a face mask with collagen, shoulder massage, and scalp treatment and massage. After the treatment was done, my skin looked and felt very noticably softer and smoother. Hair felt soft and light too. The after of the scalp looked very clean and hair was super shiny! Overall, I was very satisfied with my first experience

MJ is an icon!! This was an incredibly service and the most friendly staff. I felt comfortable, taken care of, and pampered. Literally everything you could ever want from a head spa experience! Would 10/10 recommend and will for sure be coming back!

Amazing place, very relaxing. MJ did a great job on my hair and scalp massage as well on my shoulders and neck helping big knots that I had. Felt renewed after. My face also feels amazing after a face mask, is very soft and tight. Feels very moisturized and amazing! Definitely recommend this place. I’ll definitely be back!

Japanese Head Spa by MJ was absolutely wonderful! They were so personable, funny, and professional — and they really went the extra mile to make the experience special. You can tell they care deeply about their clients, with so many thoughtful personal touches throughout the treatment. They’re incredibly knowledgeable, flexible, and kind — just genuinely lovely people. My scalp has never felt so clean, my hair was unbelievably soft afterward, and my skin was glowing thanks to their collagen treatment.

MJ and her staff are wonderful: My scalp is squeaky clean after a long wonderful hair treatment and massage. Highly recommend, bring your friends or kids. I came with lifelong friends as a part of a girls getaway. We had a great time.
