The highlight was the vegetable tempura! Enjoyed the shrimp tempura too. The main dish was too spicy for me, but my daughter loved it. Enjoyed the whole experience of SLC Chinatown, lots of different choices
Food Quality: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Don’t skip on: The Rose Tteobokki with cheese This place was so good!! Located inside the main Chinatown building, Halgatteok offers the classic street food - Tteobokki! These rice cakes covered in sauce and cheese are so delicious and addictive. We got a sampling outside of the store from Sergio and it was love at first bite! When we decided to go order a full entree, Sergio took the time to walk us through how the menu works (there were 4 steps with several options) and also told us exactly what we just tasted if we wanted to order that same dish again. I’ve never had that happen before and didn’t know that level of customer service even existed! Huge shout out to him! We liked the sample so much that we ended up getting exactly that - the Rose Tteobokki, Ssal Teok, Level 1 with cheese. Get it - you won’t regret it. While we did a takeout order, we sat down while we waited for our order to be prepared. The wait wasn’t long at all, but there is one - of you’re in about hurry, order it before, and then do your shopping and it will be ready by the time you get back. The store was clean and well kept - green check marks in books! Can’t wait to go back and try the other options they had!
The atmosphere is good and the staff is friendly. I wasn't too satisfied with their food though. Their tteokbokki was a bit dry when it came out, and it wasn't flavorful. Their tempuras have a very thick batter which I'm not a big fan of. I personally feel like this place doesn't represent the generic taste of Korean street food. The broth for the fish cake soup was good but the fish cake wasn't. I don't think I'll come back.
such good tteokpokki! i wasn't a huge fan at first because the grandma's sauce has dashi (dashima kelp soup) broth, and while it is savory and very high quality, i'm not personally not a huge fan of the slight fishy flavor (same with the fishcakes) however i was offered a sample of a ssaltteok with the rosé sauce and it was divine! so the last time i went i ordered the rosé sauce tteokpokki. it is so delicious and creamy. the bacon in the sauce gives a slight smokey flavor and the sausages that come with it are super flavorful while not too spicy. i like extra vegetables in mine and i also highly recommend adding noodles and melted cheese onto your tteokpokki
I wish I could review the food, but I'm writing this based on the service. I was told my fish cake soup would be ready in 7 minutes. I was still waiting with no communication. It finally came out close to the 30-minute mark. I understand kitchens get busy, but a 7-minute estimate being off by over 400% is unacceptable. Poor management and a lack of respect for the customer's time. Won't be returning.
Food was GREAT! My mom and I had a wonderful lunch here. We tried the Grandma and Rose Tteokbokki with Ramen and cheese! One was level 1 spice and it was not spicy at all but had great flavor. The other was level 3 spicy and it had a bit of a kick but nothing overwhelming. Overall we rate this 10/10. Service was also great. We will definitely be back.
I love that SLC has a 떡볶이 restaurant now! I’ve tried a few different things here, and my favorite is the rose 떡볶이. The food has a lot of flavor. I rated the service and atmosphere 4/5 because we got to the restaurant 45 mins before they closed, and they rushed and watched us, acting like they wanted us to leave. 20 minutes before they closed, they said we had to pay right then and that they were closed. Other people tried to come in and order, but they told the customers that they were closed even though they were open for another 20 minutes. The open hours on the window matched the hours listed on Google, so I’m not sure why they said that they were closed. I saw some other reviews that had the same experience as me, so maybe this is something to work on with the employees. The service was great the other 3 times I was there. I highly recommend this restaurant!
