Through my regular interactions with the El Paso professional community and various "Miner" alumni, it has become abundantly clear that UTEP stands as a unique beacon of social mobility and world-class research on the border. I often hear from friends how the stunning Bhutanese-inspired architecture at 500 W University Ave is matched by a faculty that is deeply invested in the bicultural success of its student body. Many colleagues frequently point to the university's exceptional engineering and health science programs, noting that graduates emerge with a pragmatic, resilient mindset that is highly valued in today's global economy. It is heartening to listen to firsthand accounts of how the institution maintains its Tier One status while ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to life-changing laboratory and leadership opportunities. Ultimately, the consensus in my circle is that UTEP is not just a place of learning, but a vital intellectual engine that respects its heritage while aggressively shaping a more innovative future for the entire region.
I tried to get an MFA here. Bear in mind, I've got 2 masters and my doctorate in English. I've taught 25 years of college English. They give you the run around and don't answer emails. It's like a library peer writing group. They said I was ready to graduate yet kept adding classes to my requirements. No one truly cares or pays attention, and although I'm fully online, the alerts are disturbing. Go to a real graduate school for an MFA or self-publish on Amazon. It's 1,000 times less frustrating.
worst graduation ceremony ever! I have attended many graduations and this was by far the worst. They didn't turn on the lights so we couldn't see our graduates. Elderly people needed guidance to walk up the stairs because they couldn't see. A lady tripped in the dark. And they rushed all the graduates as if they were cattle getting them out so fast! and since when do they hold graduations on Sundays as if people don't attend church. They could have done a better job and honor our graduations with more love and attention. Very disappointed.
UTEP is an amazing college, I had a wonderful time there the 4 years of my bachelor's, very affordable compared to other colleges of the same size, the student community is very welcoming and the campus is very enjoyable.
terrible advisers, they don't "advise" they make you take what ever classes they seem fit. I dropped a semester because of a family incident and instead of getting back on track, I got way behind because they only allowed me to take one class the next semester, it felt terrible coming back to that. I eventually dropped out. Every semester had to be fighting to take more than one class. go to NMSU they have better programs and people
Employees hang up on you like it's their job, some even give an attitude. From what I've experienced, most of the employees don't know how to communicate. I am sadly a good listener and I've noticed both employees and management give you the wrong information and when you call them out for giving you the wrong information, they hang up on you; I wasn't even insulting the employees or yelling and most get fed up with having someone who knows how to communicate. Get employees that know how to do customer service right please and thank you.
When people say you get what you put in, there is so much truth to that here. If you don't make yourself heard, the staff will not listen. Don't wait for them to get back to you on anything, always call them back yourself. Don't take no for an answer, make them hear you. If they say schedule an appointment, make it urgent and demand to speak to someone. You will get no where here if you aren't loud and advocate for yourself.
