Kumon Math and Reading Center of Davis

I attended Kumon more than 15 years ago when I was in high school. I didn't realize it at the time, but the program has had a formative impact on my academic and professional journey. In addition to honing my mathematical reasoning abilities, the program helped me learn the value of discipline and consistency. I am now an assistant professor and these skills that I developed while enrolled in Kumon I still rely on in my academic career. Looking back, I’m grateful for having experienced Kumon, which has shaped the way I learn, think, and even teach my own students today.

As a parent, I couldn’t be more pleased with the experience my child has had at Kumon Davis. The program has been an incredible way to help my child develop stronger math and reading skills, but the true highlight of our experience has been Barbara, who is an exceptional teacher. Since joining Kumon, I’ve seen significant improvements not only in my child’s academic abilities but also in their attitude toward learning. Barbara has played a huge role in that transformation, and I’m so grateful for her support and guidance. I highly recommend Kumon Davis, especially if you’re lucky enough to have Barbara working with your child. Her passion for teaching and her commitment to helping students succeed is something truly special.

I regret to share a very disappointing experience with the Kumon center, specifically regarding the manager, Barbara. After participating in the program for six months, we decided to discontinue for personal reasons. Upon informing Barbara of our decision, she requested an immediate meeting with my son (in 6th grade) and me. During this meeting, Barbara's approach was concerning. She made comments that equated leaving Kumon with a lack of interest in my child's success. Was very insistent that I needed to be more willing to work with her to help my child. More troublingly, she told my son that his intelligence was dependent on continuing with Kumon and said he would fall behind because he was quitting, which made him visibly upset. As a parent, I found this interaction inappropriate for a child in 6th grade. Additionally, there was an issue with the center's refund policy. We had paid a "required deposit" equivalent to one month's tuition ($160). However, Barbara informed us that this amount was non-refundable because we didn't complete a full year in the program. This policy was not clearly communicated to us at the start.

I could see how the services here could benefit some learners/students depending on their learning style. For us it was not a good fit. It felt like the staff was too pushy/focused on sales and long term enrollment.

Extremely unprofessional and unhelpful tutoring. Started my kid off with adding and addition when she was working on fractions. Didn’t help with her current work at all.

Really a bad example on this center, specially on this COVID period. Never get the work evaluated. Bad teaching and bad evaluation. While stopping service, tricky contract waiting for you.

Definitely recommend doing kumon because it was helpful for constantly staying ahead in school!! They helped with the new concepts and the manager was very supportive
