I was here 2012-2014 for Power Systems engineering tech degree with renewable resources as part of it. The teachers are great, staff is great and it all went smooth but a few things. I had an adviser who was more on the feminist side and was not helpful. To the point I had a buddy who co-oped at a place and got my my co-op because she was trying to send me to some retail place selling lighting. Larry was great and helped massively though. I finished and was excited to transfer to U.C, or a like and found out real fast that nearly all schools near by did NOT accept most of not all the credits from Cincinnati State, neither advisor made me aware of this, I should have asked though too. Few things to take away from my review and experience. 1. My Program is no longer there and was not recognized anywhere I went. My AA is just a science tech degree. 2. Touch base with the school you want to go to after this and see what programs transition because college is a business, they only care when you as the right questions.
Had the pleasure of meeting some very gracious and professional people and professors (not you, PAUL Weingartner). But I also had the misfortune of dealing with some of the most unprofessional and trashy people ever, who take their anger out on you because they're broke and miserable. As far as the curriculum, it taught useful things but felt a bit half-baked at times. Also Madeline Ndambakuwa can't teach her speech class to save her life, and I'm surprised she's even tenured.
So far so good. I have enrolled in the Associates HIM program and am enjoying it. I am only in the first semester but have had no real issues. The outgoing HIM program director was retiring and did seem to not really care too much, but the new one is great. I enjoyed my meeting with her. My one real issue, I am doing this totally online. No classes at the school. For an online degree, I sure have to go to the school a lot. In the first half of this semester alone I have had to go up there at least 5 times. To get books and I was required to make another meeting with my academic advisor for an intro to college class on top of the meeting I had when I first applied. This is online school, I should not be going onto the actual campus but maybe once just to check it out and meet with my advisor. Other than that, nothing but good stuff. My professors are professional and competent, even if they are online. So far the work is challenging and they have made it pretty easy to use their online services. Registering for classes, checking on financial aid stuff, school tools like email are all easy to access. If you are looking for a 2 year program, this might be the place for you. Just make sure you do your research first, and do not just go off of Google Reviews. I see a lot of negative reviews on here that seem like its a personal problem, not a school problem. One review talked about "ghetto acting students" which alone is a racist comment. Ghetto? What do you mean by that? Just because someone is immature does not mean the campus is bad. A lot of people going here are fresh out of high school. College shapes you, college helps bring you into adult hood. Give people a chance. Don't go off Google Reviews alone. Go in and speak to the program director, to financial aid, to admissions and gage it for yourself.
I attended 2 semesters here which went well and allowed me to complete half of my credit hours. When I first applied to the school my first advisor assured me I could complete my program completely online, as I don’t live closer enough to commute daily. When I went to register for my third semester I was informed one of my classes would have to be taken in person which I was annoyed at since I was assured I would be fully online. I did find a way to make the commute for that class once a week, and was told the rest of the classes I would definitely be able to do fully online. The day before one of my classes was about to start, I noticed it was changed from online to in person. Then I noticed 2 of the classes had changed like that. I contacted my instructor but didn’t hear anything back so had to miss the first class. I knew I wouldn’t be able to complete my degree without these 2 courses but I wasn’t able to commute, so I looked into transferring and ended up having to transfer because I never heard back from the instructor. The day after I completed my transfer the instructor emailed back and said I might be able to take the classes online, which isn’t even a full answer and was too late at this point. I was also told I would receive CState Accelerate which would cover whatever balance is left after my financial aid. I kept waiting for my balance to be covered by them and contacted them multiple times asking when the remaining balance would be taken care of and they would never give me a date and it ended up showing I owed 1000 dollars which I couldn’t afford as I was told it would be covered. Also was a nightmare when trying to transfer as the school was withholding my transcripts so I couldn’t send them to the new school. After I dropped all my courses the school also told me I would owe a fee for dropping them which is ridiculous because it’s not my fault that the instructor made the courses impossible for me to take last minute. Overall horrible experience, the staff who answers the phone are some of the rudest and least helpful people I’ve ever met and the faculty likes to deceive students and potential students. They will tell you whatever you want to hear so you will go there and change it last minute with no remorse. Would never recommend for anyone. Edit: They are also charging me money to drop my courses now even though the website says 100% refund the first week.
Best landscaping education you can get. I started an associates of applied business in Landscape Horticulture in autumn 2024 and have learned more than I could imagine about landscaping. Mark and Heather are the best instructors anyone could ask for, and are very supportive and encouraging. If you work hard in the Landscape Horticulture program, then the landscaping world is your oyster, which you with shovel will open.
My experience at Cincinnati State was something of a mixed bag. I had previously attended a 4-year university but was seeking a career change. Given the low cost of attendance that community colleges provide, I figured that Cincinnati State would be a great option. My first year of studies were great. I had some very kind professors who genuinely cared about the students and the material that they taught. Some faculty members could be a bit rude at times, but that is to be expected in higher education. After my first year, I truly felt like I was on the way to great success. My second year on the other hand turned out to be quite the opposite. During my first semester back from co-op, I received notification that I had been dropped from two classes without explanation. Upon reaching out to the registrar, I was told to contact my program chair/advisor. Upon reaching out to my advisor, I was not given any guidance. I felt like I was really left to my own devices to try to figure out how to schedule my classes. In addition, I found the teaching quality to be quite disappointing. In the one class that I was able to take that semester, my professor did not once hand out a syllabus or explain the grading rubric. I persistently asked him when grades would be given back, and he would give me a specific date. Only once did he ever give back grades on said date. The rest were given at the end of the semester, thus leaving all students in a state of anxiety over what our final grade would be. He stressed the importance of attendance and punctuality but was hardly ever on time for class. On some occasions, he even made me late to work because class would run over. For these reasons as well as the problems mentioned earlier about the administration, I decided not to return to Cincinnati State. In short, Cincinnati State is a good option for those seeking a low-cost education, and there are some great programs and professors here. However, the unorganized and highly bureaucratic administration combined with some exceptionally unprofessional professors keep the school from being as great as it could be. Please tread lightly if considering Cincinnati State now or in the future.
Pretty good school so far. Laid back atmosphere. I’m currently taking online courses and they have been going well, communication with professors are excellent. However I did not appreciate the politics this school plays in my education. They will occasionally send an email out regarding their stance in politics and what they deem important (much like the media). I didn’t come to Cincinnati state for your input in politics. I came here for an education. Otherwise the school is alright. Wish there was better communication between financial aid and the important things pertain to me.
