My Curly Stylist

It's taken me over a month to write this review as I've been processing the trauma of the experience of getting my hair cut by Adam. I know this sounds dramatic lol, but it's accurate. Firstly, I've been going to Sion since she first started over 8 years ago and have always referred curly girls to her salon. Nowadays tho, she's booked out almost a year it seems, so I booked a cut with Adam who I have seen previously for simple treatments. He started by sitting down and asking what I wanted. I told him, showed him pictures and also motioned with my hands where I'd like it to end up and what I wanted (I had waist length curly hair and wanted to take off dead ends, keep it long and full, past the shoulders, midway down my back and chest). He nodded and verbalized understanding. I said I'd like it long enough to wear a bun since I wear them often and he says, "Oh definitely you'll be able to do a bun". He could see I was apprehensive about the cut and says, "Don't worry, I always err on the side of LONG." I trusted he'd heard me and would do as I asked. HE DID NOT. The first thing, he says, "One thing about me, I don't like to bother with things we don't have to bother with!" and twists all my hair together in the back and CHOPS it with one big WHACK. He throws the cut hair to the ground, flips my hair forward and it was already TO MY SHOULDERS! WTH! He cut it SO SHORT! EASILY, several inches shorter than what I'd asked for and it was only the initial cut!! I was so shocked. Right there I told him, Oh my goodness! THat's too short! He kinda laughs, keeps talking fast and tells me to just wait. He did NOT listen to me and there was no going back because it was already cut so quickly, without thought or care. The rest of the appointment I was just trying not to crash out at the shortness and hoped for at least some kind of nice haircut even though it was NOT what I asked for. Negative. It's the worst short curly hair cut I've ever seen. At the end, my curls barely skim the top of my shoulders. I told him it was NOT what I asked for. He agreed and starts pulling down my curls telling me there was definitely more length in them. Oh my goodness, I canNOT with this guy. (Just a note - obviously unable to be worn in a bun, not even close!, it can't even be pulled back in a ponytail the pieces in the front are so short) This man does NOT understand curly hair, but worst of all, does NOT LISTEN to his clients and LIES. In my culture, hair is almost sacred and he just disregards everything, his manner is so dismissive and disturbing. I am so sad I ever booked with him, ever trusted him with my hair. Do yourself a favor and book with Sion - she is the ONLY trustworthy stylist in that salon.

Sion cuts my daughter’s hair and Adam cuts mine. Both are knowledgeable about curly hair and happy to answer all my questions. They both take time to consult and make sure they are giving you the cut you want. I never feel like they are rushed and feel like I’m the most important person at the moment. I would highly recommend if you have curly hair. Worth the price.

My curls are back!! I’ve received so many compliments on my hair after getting my curly cut, and the education for how to style it is priceless. I’ve recommended this salon to friends with curly hair because the results are amazing. I have a before from about a week prior to my cut. I used to pin back the top of my hair because it just would not curl…because the layers were too long and it was too heavy. I’m so happy with my hair, I absolutely love it.

I have had Merida-curly hair ever since I was a baby, but after moving to such a dry state I felt like my curls had disappeared. They would come back when I would visit humid places, but Utah left me feeling like I wasn't myself without my curls. I love keeping my hair as long as possible, which meant that I would go extremely long periods without cutting it. I finally decided that, after four years, it was time to bite the bullet and just get it cut. I heard about salons that specialize in curly hair, and knew I needed to see what it was all about. I found My Curly Stylist from a google search, and noticed how great their reviews are, so I scheduled an appointment for my birthday as a treat to myself. Adam was the kindest person who, from the moment I walked in the door, dedicated all of his attention to getting to know me and my hair, educating me, and listening to me. Not once did he overstep or make me feel pressured into getting a specific cut or style, he always made sure I was in control. He also took his time to explain how to best care for my hair, and habits I've formed that need reshaping. It wasn't just a "here is what will look good, here is what I'm doing, there's your new haircut, have a nice day." He was thorough and thoughtful and kind. I also must mention his incredible puns haha. He explained all the products he was using, and why they're good and what makes them good. It didn't feel like a sales pitch and I was never pressured into buying any of them. Instead, I was sent home with a bag full of samples, as well as some other goodies. My hair feel lighter but thicker, soft and voluminous, but not frizzy or stringy. I was so scared that he would have to chop a lot off because of how damaged it was, but I was shocked to see that the change in length was hardly noticeable. This is by no means a cheap haircut, but that's because the experience you get is definitely not "cheap". The quality is outstanding from start to finish. If you want to invest in yourself, I would say that this is the place you should be putting your money.

Love the cuts I've gotten from Adam! The cuts I've gotten have looked great even as my hair grows, doesn't have that weird grown out awkward stage. The whole experience is just super chill and very educational! Great if you are new to wearing your hair curly or if you need a few tricks to take your hair to the next level!
