The Curly Hair Studio

Had my first curly cut done by Segie, here, and she did an amazing job!! She taught me so much about how to care for my curls and I have had fantastic results! My hair is curling better than ever. I’ve told other curl/wavy hair girls about this place and my boss and sister have now also had amazing cuts and curl education education experiences there as well! Highly recommend!

What a lovely experience! My 14yo daughter wanted to start embracing her curls so we went to The Curly Hair Studio. Our appointment was with Segie and she was incredible. She was so patient, informative, and detailed to help my daughter manage her curls. What we learned from Segie was it is less about the product and more about the technique. Segie was also warm and friendly and did such a great job coaching my daughter that my daughter was able to re-create her curls from the appointment at home and on her own. Thank you Segie!

Best haircut I've ever had. Segie did a fantastic job. They only cut wavy here and they know exactly how to not only shape it, but they teach you how to replicate it yourself and take care of it. Light and bright studio. I've gotten my haircut there twice and count myself lucky to have found this place. Having someone who understands curly hair is worth every penny.

I found Atoya on Instagram and was so drawn to her authenticity and loved watching her tutorial videos. Even though her Curly Hair Studio is a 4 hour round trip for me, I booked an appointment. She sat with me and took time to get to know me...and my hair! It was the best hair experience I have ever had and have now been a loyal client for years. PS...my hair has never looked better! Highly recommend.

Atoya runs such a marvelous business! I love my haircut every time. She is kind, compassionate, and fun. She employs wonderful people who are all highly talented. I love that every ethnic group is represented in Atoya's studio! All are welcome and treated with respect and even love. I so look forward to getting my hair cut there.

Segie is amazing! She’s been cutting my hair for a few years, and even now that I’ve moved to Seattle, I’m still coming back to Beaverton for my haircuts. Segie is the only hair stylist I’ve seen who can give me a haircut that makes my wavy hair look good even with the most minimal, low-maintenance routine.

My hair has always been a conflicted subject for me. Growing up my mother fixated on it as being one of my key problems. It was too much, too unruly, took too much time, too unkempt, unattractive. In middle school I discovered straightening irons, and the sound and smell of my hair crackling into submission started to feel like a tiny victory. I straightened multiple times a day, as a curly haired Oregonian. The years passed, even getting married keeping up this charade that I had straight hair. In 2007 I had my son. I had him in the summer, and I had neither the time nor energy to keep up my straightening schedule, so I wore it in its natural state more often. I remember distinctly having just had my son, standing to burp him over my shoulder, and my mother coming up I thought to ogle the baby, but instead picking up my hair and saying,"you know, you could still straighten it." And something inside me cracked in a whole new way. I knew I wouldn’t anymore. I realized how deep my self loathing was, and I didn’t want my child to have a mother who tried to eradicate a natural aspect of herself every day. I started wearing it in its natural wavy state. It had actually gotten curlier during my pregnancy(hormones!). 3.5 years later I had our second son. I started looking into curly hair on Pinterest while scrolling my phone, feeding my baby. I saw Atoya’s picture there first, I’m fairly certain. I learned curl exclusive stylist’s existed. My stylist who had cut my hair since I was 10, had even done my hair for my wedding, was not used to the curls, but she loved them. She encouraged me to keep them going, but her cuts just weren’t hitting like they used to. When my youngest was probably 2 I saw a Craigslist ad asking for someone to be a curly haircut model. It was free. Money was tight, I needed a cut, and I went. The cut was great, and the dry cut experience made so much sense. I once more was a curly haircut model at a different salon, after that I submitted my name to Atoya’s list. I think it was like 3-6 months later I got the email I was in. I went in with some major imposter syndrome, but did nonetheless. Would this lady be judgy? Scary? No. She was the most welcoming stylist. She cut through the curly "rules" and noise and made doing my hair SO EASY. She emphasizes finding your "why". "Why do I want to wear my hair curly?" And she doesn’t shame those who straighten. I’ve been "flip/coat/scrunching" for years now. And, this sounds made up but it’s true, I get compliments EVERY DAY on my hair. It is crazy that something that once carried so much hatred and shame could be made an asset by simple instruction and acceptance. Atoya does not shame, she does not complicate, she’s not critical. She is nourishing to your hair and your heart. Her personality is authentic and magnetic, and her haircuts are BOMB. My first cut with her was when she had a chair at another salon, so I’ve got to witness her make her own space. Her team is a wonderful reflection of who she is. Gladys, Summer, Sade, and Segie, all women who radiate from within. A crew of various backgrounds united with the common love for curls, changing lives in ways I doubt typical stylists have the privilege to do. It is through Atoya I met Lorraine Massey, and even worked for "Curl" magazine. A hairstylist has MANY personalities come through their salon, and sit in their chair. Often doing deep work that people take for granted as surface level. They are performing a kind of therapy, especially a curl stylist, helping us live and accept ourselves in our natural state. Working with multiple stylists I learned what a drain it can be emotionally carrying all that weight. But I also learned what an absolute joy it is every time someone leaves their chair in love with what grows out of their head, exactly as is. I am so thankful to have gone down the rabbit hole of curls and found Atoya on the other side.
