Stopped by Asian American Market in Ventura and was really impressed by how clean and well organized the store is, everything was easy to find and the whole place feels welcoming. They’ve got a great selection of staples too, like curry paste, Thai curry ingredients, egg noodles, udon, pho supplies, 5 spice, lemongrass, kimchi, and more, so it’s a great one-stop shop if you cook Asian food at home. Rani, the cashier in the morning, was especially friendly and made checkout quick and pleasant. Definitely a great neighborhood market, and I’ll be coming back!
The husband and wife owners are very kind and very informative on what they stock in their store. They not only carry Asian spices and ingredients, they also carry Kirkland products. Very good and local store.
Plenty of Asian market favorites here at good prices, parking can be hard to get in the evening though.
Great local market!! I was able to find all my essential Asian cooking ingredients such as rice paper, kimchi, kewpie mayo, rice cakes, mirin, nori, furikake, rice flower, etc. I would definitely recommend this market for your Asian cooking needs, especially if you like making sushi.
I've been frequenting this establishment for approx. Five years now. Gary is an awesome owner as he's always talking with customers finding out how their experience has been. I actually was going to work there (fell & broke my hip at my other job, so it was not to be) that's how much I enjoy this place. They have a tremendous selection that rivals the big chain grocery stores. If they don't have what you require, talk to anyone in their & they will "put in a request" for you. As far as the cashiers being rude.. Everyone has a bad day every now & then and I'm sure the staff here does also, but that's one of my main reasons for shopping here. In the five years that I've been going here I have NEVER, NOT ONCE seen or heard any of the staff here being rude, condescending, short, or otherwise abrasive to ANYONE, let alone customers. One thing I can say is Gary and all the staff here do value & put the customer first!!
We've shopped here only once before. They are really unfriendly; didn't greet us and didn't say thank you after purchasing. They also try to reserve a whole portion of *city designated street parking* with a tiny sign that says "asian american parking only," which is against city ordinances. If you are parking here, don't feel pressured by the owner to leave— he's not even allowed to block off street parking. We get our groceries from the Asian Market in Oxnard instead— way better selection and more polite.
Dishonest Cashier: Double-Check Your Receipt! We went there to buy some groceries. The total was around $10.25. I saw the amount on the counter display, tapped my card, and then received a notification that $102.52 had been charged! I was completely shocked and confronted the elderly lady at the counter. She acted surprised but didn’t apologize. The fact is, I believe she intentionally did this because she thought we were tourists. Here are the reasons: 1. The counter display and the amount on the card machine were different. It wasn’t just a small mistake; it was $10.25 vs. $102.52. This indicates intentional behavior. 2. When the final receipt was printed, she looked at it for a while before handing it to me without saying anything. If she didn’t notice the total charge, then what was she looking at? 3. Even after her mistake, she didn’t apologize willingly. She only said sorry after we got angry and confronted her. This is such dishonest behavior, so please check your charge if you ever visit this store. And no, we won’t be coming back to this store again! Hopefully, no one else has to go through what we did.
