To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a clean Asian supermarket here. In my experience, aside from a few good ones in Chicago, many Asian markets can be pretty messy. The prices here are a bit higher compared to those in Chicago, but still acceptable—after all, Chicago is quite far. The store is well-stocked, neatly organized, with clean floors and bright lighting. There’s also a hot food section, but it wasn’t open when I visited—maybe because it wasn’t mealtime. Oh, and they even have Onigiri To-Go inside! Haha.
Honestly, it's meh. The store is clean enough for AZN standards I guess. I wouldn't hand out the cleanest awards or the best bathrooms when the trash cans in the bathrooms are over full. The selection was fine and the pricing is what you'd expect, higher than smaller mom and pop shops but the store is mostly clean and well kept, well lit. The store has AC while some smaller places might just leave the door open and have a fan blowing air in. Not sure if this store is in its death throws or just underperforming at the moment. There were zero diners, although the cooked food area was completely bare, none of the trays had any food in it. No one was even behind the counter. The fresh fish area was also baren, although the fish is allegedly buried "under the ice". The bakery section is unstaffed. When I went in on a Saturday morning there was a couple packs of bakery goods. When I went back late in the afternoon on the same day, they finally had the case filled with baked goods sourced from Chicago. I can't help but feel they just aren't applying themselves completely and just barely clinging on to survive perhaps? Not sure if this was a post pandemic thing or not. The last time I visited this store location it was a different business some 13 years ago. I'm from a few hours away and really wanted to be impressed, although I wasn't. I wish them luck and hope they can reach their full potential.
I have been one time, first impression; I was shocked! In a good way. Everything is reasonably priced (I spent maybe $200 on a months worth of food) There were a lot of varieties to choose from like Thai, Korean, Chinese, to just name a few. There's also a huge variety of noodles, frozen foods, desserts, and a really great variety of hotpot items as well as vegetables, and rice. There's already a great selection of sauces and seasonings. Overall 10/10 recommend, I will definitely be back! I'm obsessed.
This place (Oriental Mart) used to be good before 2012 when the Chinese student at MSU took the ownership and it went down hill ever since. Everything was expensive and not fresh. The new owner only cares his profitability and focuses on non-grocery business such as Karaoke. I simply just stopped going there. Just saw they recently renovated the store and changed name to Fresh International Market. I thought I would gave it a second chance. Went on a Monday and the store was near empty. No customer, empty food court, empty fish section. Everything was still ridiculously expensive, more than twice or triple the reasonable prices. For example, a vegetable sold at $0.98/lb at 169 Asian Mart Madison Heights would cost $4.99/lb here in this place. Guess everyone just votes by feet.
They have a wide variety of wonderful treats, fruits, veg, and everything you could ask for if you know what you're looking for!
I’ve only been to this supermarket twice, and both times I ended up buying expired food — once it was a seasoning, and the other time Shin Ramyun. I can’t understand why products that have been expired for more than three months are still being sold and don't know if there are any other expired products. Never mind. Never go there again.
☻ There was an Oriental Market and a hot pot restaurant together. The Oriental Market had a variety of vegetables and fruits, as well as meat and fish that were butchered to fit Asian food. It was also nice to see a lot of good quality snacks and products from Korea and Japan. Alcoholic beverages such as soju and sake are also available. If you need various sauces, ramen, and Asian ingredients, I recommend visiting at least once. There are also Asian industrial products, such as chopsticks, pots, tableware, and stationery.
