This was my go to Safeway for many years, until I got tired of the employees’ attitudes. Things like not letting customers in 10 or 15 minutes before the store officially closes. That’s not acceptable if you race there to pick up a couple of things before they close and some idiot tells you that you can’t go in because it’s too late. I rarely go here anymore. But as Safeway goes, this is a mediocre store, it’s not as nice as the one on college, but it’s on par but with worse customer service than the one on Solano.

So it would be 1 star, but for the sushi chef. He deserves more respect. He makes good sushi. How many people know this? 5 stars for him. This place is pretty trashy. They had to remove all outdoor seating because of all the crazies. They also allow people to stand outside the doors and solicit customers. all this would be excusable as typical to locale, but there are NEVER any handbaskets, even when the store is not busy. Considering how expensive Safeway is here, buy more hand baskets!! Employees told me that it is because thieves take their stolen food out along with the basket. So basically, Safeway can't supply its customers handbaskets because they let their customers steal. Which explains the people who come from afar to this store. It's difficult to find employees on the store to ask questions. Everything that is inedible is locked up. More nails in the coffin for "brick & mortar", as Amazon waits silently on the sidelines. There is only ever ONE register open. Safeway does not want to hire people. I know that the constant theft is a societal and policy issue. California lawmakers decided to legalize stealing, which probably expains the higher prices that we pay. And all the good CA citizens can pat themeselves on the back for destroying trust and societal norms. Anyway, love the African-American man who monitors the self-checkout. He does provide friendly and good customer service. The employees are probably doing their best under circumstances.

For the second time at self checkout, one of the employees tried to jump in before I could scan, and take a guest survey to give himself a great review (instead of the customer). What he didn’t realize was that customer he was trying to answer for was my partner who had just finished their checkout. The thing is we always give Great reviews, but the idea that an employee is going to hold us up from checking out in order to fraudulently give himself a five star review is just crazy. It’s unseemly and rude and weird My biggest problem is with the management because whatever they’re doing is not incentivizing employees. The whole point is to reward employees and lead to quality performance and customer service. Instead, you’ve got employees at this supermarket, HOLDING UP the self checkout line so that they could game the system and fill out fake reviews when a customer walks away without doing it themselves.

Maria, the only employee at the cash register around 9:30 pm on 1/30/26 needs to be reprimanded, if not fired, for the disdain, rudeness, and lack of customer service towards my senior parents (67 and 68) and I. She rushed to ring all the articles when I told her I have a coupon for the ice cream on my phone. They rang at full price. I brought it to her attention again that the 4 ice creams are discounted. Her response was "it’s there" and raises her voice with the total. Again I point out that the screen is showing full price. Her response again is the same "it’s there." To this, I tell her again that I am seeing the screen and it’s not reflecting the discount and to please ask someone for assistance if she’s having trouble with the discount. To this, she raises her voice to my 67 and 68 year old parents and I and tells us that "we need to back down and stop yelling because she will refuse ringing us and tell us to get out" At this point, a couple of customers behind me made the comment that the cashier isn’t list in the right. At this point, the cashier says "you didn’t show me the discount, need to show me the discount" and I tell her that this is what I’ve been trying to do. Then she was upset because she needed to ring everything again in order for the discount to go through. Never have we had such an awful experience at a Safeway, thanks to this cashier.

Worst store ever. If you buy a lottery ticket here and win, be extremely careful. The customer service staff may take your ticket and redeem it herself. This led to a major dispute, and she later denied ever seeing the ticket and disappeared without returning.

There’s no need to offend customers with unnecessary remarks. When I visit late in the evening or early in the morning and ask for help finding a product, the staff often just point vaguely and give me a look that feels very unwelcoming. When I bring my own reusable bag for environmental reasons, they’ve even criticized it, saying it’s too flimsy. I want the store manager to be aware that these unnecessary comments and behaviors are upsetting customers. I’m not asking for overly friendly service—just basic manners. Yet, even after complaints, the staff continue to act the same way. Rude employees are a major reason people avoid this place.

I went to Safeway and needed to use the restroom. They don’t give out the PIN code — instead, they said someone would come and open the door for me. Nobody ever showed up. If you need to use the restroom, don’t bother going to this Safeway.
