Dr. Nicole F. Vélez

I'm sorry to be the wet towel here, but I can't recommend this dermatologist. Dr. Velez has a sterling reputation - but I was told she only performs surgery now. I was therefor scheduled for a body skin scan with her P.A. ,Nadia. I have over 1,100 moles and growths on my body with a recent squamous cell carcinoma removed. Nadia entered the exam room without any of my prior histories (which I had hand delivered in paper form to the office). She looked at perhaps 3 growths on me, spending 5 minutes or so - and sent me on my way. A few days later I later had a Vectra360 scan performed at West Penn hospital which revealed that I have 13 alarming growths. None of these were looked at by Nadia. I don't know - is it proper to call this a dereliction of Nadia's responsibility? It certainly was the LEAST thorough skin exam I have ever had, and I have had far more than 20 in my past. I have subsequently made an appointment with another dermatologist (a Dr.) and certainly cannot recommend Pittsburgh Skin for diagnostic needs.

I was diagnosed with squamous skin cancer on my neck, and Moh's surgery was recommended. I was so fortunate to have selected Dr. Valez as my surgeon. So friendly with such a calming effect on her patients - explaining every step ahead of time about the process. She establishes a real connection with her patients. She surrounds herself with a friendly and knowledgeable staff that helps ease any angst before the procedure. I had my surgery on Friday morning and said she would personally follow up later in the day. Sure enough at 7:30 she called, after a long busy day I'm sure, genuinely concerned if all was going well. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Dr Valez. She's wonderful.

TLDR: Dr. Velez is the best Mohs surgeon I have encountered, and I have had many Mohs surgeries with a number of different surgeons. Dr. Velez and her team are great, and have my very highest recommendation. I wrote a very favorable review of Dr. Velez and her practice shortly after she performed a Mohs surgery on me. In summary, she did a great job, and her nurses and assistants were incredibly kind, attentive and helpful, far beyond anything I have expected. Their availability for questions, aftercare, and follow-up visits was unparalleled. I want to supplement that very favorable review with an even more favorable review. I have had at least ten Mohs surgeries over the years, and as noted above, I felt at the time that the procedure by Dr. Velez and her staff was clearly the best Mohs experience I have had. Now that several months have gone by, I can add one more bit of praise for Dr. Velez -- the appearance of the surgical site is so good it is hard to believe. She is honestly very, very expert at all aspects of Mohs surgery; she is the best Mohs surgeon I have encountered, by a substantial margin (and many of the others were solid and quite good). Dr. Vélez is the most gentle dermatologist I have ever visited. Her experience and attention to detail is remarkable, and you can tell she really cares about her patients. I recommend her 100% for all your skincare needs! Also, her office is impeccable. Spotless, clean, and everyone followed Covid protocols (including temperature scan, social distancing, and everyone was wearing a mask). Great experience.

Dr. Vélez performed my facial Mohs surgery several years ago, it’s not even noticeable and looks beautiful! We recently had to move my father to Pittsburgh for health reasons and had to find him a dermatologist rather quickly to treat his newly found aggressive skin cancer so I automatically thought of Dr. Vélez. Dr. Vélez and her team have been wonderful and got my father in right away. They understand that he has some medical conditions to work around and have been very accommodating to put his mind at ease. He was very pleased with his surgery experience and his level of care. Dr. Vélez takes time to explain everything in detail before surgery to make sure her patients understand exactly what takes place during surgery and what to expect for follow up, she is very thorough. I'd highly recommend Dr. Vélez and her team, they are professional and truly care about their patients and families!

I’m so happy I found Dr. Vélez and her practice. She has an incredible breadth of knowledge, and really takes the time to talk to you and understand your individual needs. Prior to my wedding, she gave me a full list of product recommendations to improve my skin (many of which are available over-the-counter), and, along with a couple of minor cosmetic treatments I received at Pittsburgh Skin, I am certain I had the best skin of my life (!) on that special day. Dr. Vélez is honest, efficient, and generally delightful to interact with. I rarely write Google reviews, but I really can’t recommend Dr. Vélez and her team at Pittsburgh Skin enough. Book the appointment!!

After being seen at another dermatology practice, I was not comfortable with the treatment plan provided to me. I then made an appointment at Pittsburgh Skin and was seen by Dr. Vélez. If you have any dermatology needs, I highly recommend making an appointment. Everyone was very kind and professional. They make you feel comfortable and Dr. Vélez took her time listening to provide me with the best treatment needed. I will definitely return for any future needs.
