The General Deli & Cafe

Small shop with a minimally decorated interior, counter order & retrieval when your name is called. Staff was very friendly & attentive, and seemed to have a regular clientele on a Sunday midday. Good variety of coffee options, more sandwich choices than I expected plus daily soup & some salads & fresh baked goods. My wife & I ordered lunch to-go, splitting a Mona Sandwich (turkey-bacon-cheddar plus toppings on panini) that came with a bag of chips & some pickle slices. Excellent meal made-to-order with fresh ingredients & generous portions. We would definitely return on our next visit to South Bend.

I tried to order a decaf coffee, and they said they were sold out. My husband got a panini and said his was good. I got the hummus plate and I got 3 carrots, 3 bell peppers, and 6 small pieces of pita bread. I went up and asked why I did not get the cucumber and celery like states on their menu. They said it is implied that it is "seasonal" vegetables. I would say this is not worth almost 10 dollars, but my husband’s food was worth the price. Just not the best experience. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because my first experience here was wonderful, but today’s was really bad.

I love The General, and it's easily my favorite coffee shop in all of Michiana. When I host people visiting Notre Dame or want to grab coffee with someone in Michiana, The General is always my go-to as the place to meet up. Besides the food and coffee, the staff is always friendly and accommodating, which helps The General to stand a tier above most others. If you're looking for a great eat and aren't married to a traditional lunch or breakfast item, make sure to try the Hummus Plate.

My husband and I went here a few days ago for a brunch date. The atmosphere was great, service was friendly, and the food was delicious! However, we arrived hungry and left hungry. The food, while great, was presented in pretty small portions. So if you're looking to pop in for a delicious snack, this would be a great spot.

I had an absolutely great lunch here. Delicious coffee and non coffee drinks I would definitely check out their specials. I had their hummus tacos and their Sailor Moon inspired matcha. Both were excellent. So good in fact I had to try another one of their special drinks on the way out. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Overall a great place for coffee and sandwiches as well as other food and drink.

Service person rolled their eyes when I asked if my latte (ordered with food for a dine-in order) could be transferred from paper cup to a mug. She said "We're out of dine- in mugs" but I pointed to the ones stacked in front of me. She acted as though those would be too big- I said I didn't mind, it could be topped with foam. Actually I think this was the moment she rolled her eyes. She grudgingly poured the paper cup latte into the ceramic cup (most places would offer to re-do the drink when they make such a mistake, though I don't need that). And what do you know- the latte fit perfectly into the real cup! What was the eye roll all about? Do better.

Awesome calming place with wicked vibes and artwork and people. Great food and coffee, servers are friendly and chatty but in the best way. They made me love chai lattes and they have amazing murals outside that are worth looking at. Reuben Sandwich and bagels are good
