I love finding hidden gems like this. I happened upon this amazing little bookshop. It quaint and magical and I highly recommend it for any of you bibliophiles out there. It's tucked away beautifully a perfect book lovers nook. Find it and take home a book treasure!

What a gem! Stumbled upon this place while looking for another bookstore- wonderful, relaxing vibe. And I asked the person working for a couple of recs for a mystery, I bought them both, and enjoyed thoroughly. I can’t wait to go back! (The books, if you are interested, were The Roundhouse, and The Expendable Man) I can’t wait to go back!

For the size of the space the total selection is impressive, varied, well curated and constantly changing. I feel very confident that I purchase a book from the indoor shelves I will not be disappointed. The store is divided roughly in half between fiction and non-fiction, with the fiction overwhelmingly weighted towards "literary" titles with a smattering of classic crime / mystery / thriller. The discount bins are the primary place to look for genre fiction so the selection of recent books in genres like fantasy / romance / mystery is somewhat limited. The prices are great for the main shelves (most books between $8-12) and excellent for the discount bins on the covered patio ($5 and under). The tote bags they give away with purchases over a certain amount are also exceedingly high quality. Easily my favorite book store in Portland. Powell's who?

Stumbled upon this place by accident. You’re going to feel like you’re walking into someone’s backyard but it’s okay. Great selection of books to peruse through. Would recommend!

Super small and compact book store. Likely can find SOMETHING you want if you look long enough! Workers were super chill and welcoming.

Well-curated selection of books in a small space that’s easy to navigate due to being organized in an intuitive way. The owner is very honest - I sold him a book from my personal collection months ago and he recently became aware that the value was much higher than he had originally thought, so on my most recent visit he remembered that I was the seller and paid me the difference to reflect the book’s market price. Melville Books was already one of my favorite local bookstores but his honesty and integrity as an owner has earned him a lifetime fan. Highly recommend!

What a cool place! Found it on a walk around the neighborhood and spent time browsing for a book. Friendly, clean space and unique selections. I chose a boxed set for my students and liked the price. Winner winner! Will definitely return!
