Dog·Eared Books in Ames is truly my favorite bookstore—hands down. I happily drive all the way from Des Moines just to come here, because no other shop gives me the same joy or experience. The selection is huge, thoughtfully curated, and every shelf has spot‑on recommendations that make it easy to discover new favorites. The whole store feels welcoming and intentional, from the adorable children’s area to the cozy corners perfect for browsing. One thing I especially appreciate as a parent: they have a gender‑neutral bathroom with a changing table, which is such a considerate touch for families. And if you know, you know—the hidden reading balcony upstairs is pure magic. It’s one of those charming little surprises that make this place unforgettable. If you love books, good vibes, and spaces that feel like home, this bookstore is absolutely worth the trip. I can’t recommend it enough!

This is such a charming bookstore with a wide variety of books. I really liked how they took the time to write short synopsis of a lot of the books. That’s such a nice touch. The upstairs reading area is a comfy spot to read a good book. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I love visiting indie bookstores and this place was poppin' on independent bookstore day. They have such a wide variety of books and book-related items. The children's area at the back of the store was so cozy, and I appreciate that they have drinks available for purchase and a seating area as well. 📚

The bookstore feels welcoming and cozy in all the right ways. The staff are helpful while finding the delicate balance of letting you shop on your own. You never feel pressured to buy their recommendations; however, you should absolutely ask their recommendations because they will be amazing. After a few visits I knew I needed to end my Book of the Month subscription and get their monthly Love Unleashed subscription instead. The care Katie puts in her choices is wonderful. And you get stickers and a signed book! Finally, this holiday season I shopped Dog Eared in person and online. When my online package arrived I was so surprised and excited to see all of my books had been adorably wrapped in brown paper and string with a little sticky note labeling what they were. They went above and beyond and I am so thankful for them.

This is my absolute favorite independent bookstore in Iowa. I had not been there in over a year, so I was saddened to learn of the passing of the shop Golden Retriever. He was such a sweet boy. They have a great set up and an amazing selection of books and gifts. The employees are all knowledgeable, kind, and friendly. Highly recommend this store!!

The most wonderful place on Earth. This shop has it all and then some. It’s super kid friendly too! I love that I can take my whole family and everyone loves it. The shop has so much character. The book sellers are lovely, friendly and kind - always quick to greet, help find something or make a recommendation. The wide arrange of books they have available is incredible! I also love that they have a section of used books too. Amazing shop, lovely humans.

What an amazing spot. Books, candles, stationary, stickers, clothing, birthday gifts. This place has everything. Also a wide variety of children’s book, a loft upstairs to read and hang out in. They sell coffee and other beverages. Social events are hosted hear through their book clubs. My favorite being Thrills and chills! This book store not only have a wide variety but also so many fun and intricate events for you to have a good read. Must stop if you need a book store near you.
