Special Effects Unisex Hair Salon

This used to be the only salon that I would go to, but now I think it’s time to find a new one. My visit started off with the owner running late being about 30 minutes behind. I was fine with that, stuff happens. She asked what I wanted to do and I told her I wanted just a healthy trim. We agreed that would take about 2 inches off for it to look nice and I was okay with that. However I did NOT give her permission to cut about 5-6 inches of my hair off, she decided to do that all on her own. I feel violated by what she did. I did NOT want majority of my length cut off. When all was said and done my almost waist length hair was resting a little below my shoulder. I was in such shock I just paid and left to get out of the salon. I tried so hard to be okay with it and told myself it will grow back, but I feel so ugly. I’ve been growing my hair for the last 6 years. I’m disappointed to say I don’t think I’ll return. I was already nervous to let people cut my hair and now I don’t trust anyone to touch it. A little more than a month later I still feel ugly when I look in the mirror. I wear my hair up a lot now when I usually used to wear it down. In the end she didn’t listen and she just did what she wanted with my hair instead of what I asked for which was a trim, not a massive hair cut. If I could go back and cancel my appointment I would in a heartbeat.

The nicest people work here. Today I had a pedicure with a very talented kind woman. I only remember Julie’s name who has done a wonderful job on my hair in the past. It was so refreshing to see people treated with such compassion.

I am a bit spontaneous, so I went to Special Effects looking for blonde highlights, thinking this idea might be the most natural look for someone whose hair has undergone a lot of damage this winter. I don't like to style my hair with any styling products or blow-dryers or irons, but I do have some mousy roots coming in, so I just wanted a no-hassle hair-color fix. I liked my dark brown with natural reddish highlights - I just didn't think they could match my roots to my ends. But after a consultation with Brooke, I got exactly the shade of brown I wanted and it looks NATURAL. Yay! I will be going back every 6 weeks. So happy I called them.

Professional, reliable and friendly! I have been going for years and am always taken aback at how extraordinary the services are and the prices remain reasonable. Another asset is the over all warmth and friendliness of the staff. Whether you live locally or are a ‘walk in’ the atmosphere is always congenial.

Highly recommend! Great hair salon in East Hampton! Clean, friendly staff & great blowout which lasted for days!! I will be back next time I visit!
