I had the pleasure of visiting Black Octopus Mercantile, owned by lovely local artist Missy Johnson, on a trip to North Charleston from Canada. The shop, which came highly recommended by locals, is filled with fun, quirky gifts and souvenirs that perfectly capture the easy-going and free-spirited vibe of North Charleston featuring Missy’s original designs. I very much enjoyed meeting and chatting with Missy herself as she was running the till that day. Her love for her community is palpable. We spoke at length about the importance of reviving the area and bringing more folks to North Charleston. Her passion to her craft and dedication to the community could be felt in every small detail and kind word she had. I found out this is a new storefront and the place looks fantastic, and is a great addition to the neighbourhood, complimenting its spirit and culture. It would be wonderful to see the community and the city show her the appreciation she so richly deserves. A must-visit for anyone travelling through North Charleston!

Me and my girlfriend went here on our trip down from Ohio, looking for souvenirs and local items to bring back for memories. Very chill and cool local artist shop with clothing and other items for sale. They have a shop dog named Abel who is an awesome guy and incredibly friendly and loves being pet. Would definitely recommend it. Missy gave us some great recommendations for places to visit while down here as well and she was super hospitable and kind!

If you want unique souvenirs, this is the place! Missy and her shop dog Abel are both so sweet. We can’t wait to come back and get more of her custom items. She also had some fantastic recommendations on other places to check out.

Black Octopus is amazing. This is as local as it gets - owned/operated/designed by Missy and Jim; amazing people and business owners. I've bought multiple pieces of clothing here - several shirts, sweatpants, hoodies that are lightweight and appropriate for Charleston weather. If you're reading this review to decide if you should check out this store or come see that they have in stock, stop reading and go check it out. Black Octopus is the unique shop that has that amazing mix of quality and original design you're looking for.

My husband and I visited this shop looking for artist inspired merchandise. This shop had a cool vibe and the shop owner told us she is the artist that created all the work on the merchandise. We were able to get our family back home some very cool surf shop coastal vibe souvenirs with inspiration from Charleston. Totally appreciated that she gave my husband a military appreciation discount. We chatted for a bit about some of her upcoming plans to visit Nasheville to see some dear friends of hers and she was helpful with some suggestions of other local shops to check out and visit. Just a really cool shop to check out that I would recommend.

Love stopping in to see what Missy has concocted with her beautiful artwork! Shirts, pants, hats, stickers, key chains and more! The clothing feels amazing but it’s her uniqueness of designs, colors, and placements of of her art that brings it over the top!

The Black Octopus Mercantile shop is awesome! The designs are so creative and different! I bought a sweatshirt there more than a year ago while I was visiting from out of town. It quickly became one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I am seriously IMPRESSED with the quality of the sweatshirt and the fact that I must have washed it more than 100x at this point and the design has not faded one bit! See for yourself - it's absolutely worth a visit!
