Customer Reviews
Safeway has a rating of 4.1 out of 5 based on over 1809 reviews on Google
I’ve watched this place go downhill over the past few months. Where to start… I’m assuming due to theft they have implemented receipt checkers. Instead of hiring a competent security team, or more employees as a deterrent, they decided to stop the paying customers. Next, the fruit has flies all over it. The organic vegetables are never edible. I was looking for some onions yesterday and had to pick up almost every one to find a few good ones. Most had MOLD! Now onto the real concern, Meat/Seafood. There was a young man working when I walked up. He didn’t seem enthusiastic to be helping me, but I get it — we all have long days. I ordered Black Mussels and 1lb of Snow Crab clusters. The employee was less than gentle handling live mussels (which you cannot use if they are cracked or dead). After he packaged the crab, I checked out and headed home to start my dinner. Imagine my surprise opening the package to see FRUIT FLY EGGS ALL OVER THE CRAB. FLY EGGS!!! Like what in the dumpster fire is happening at this store? After I saw the flies, I immediately went back to the store. I told the lady standing at customer service what happened. She reacted appropriately — said "I’m sorry, let me call my manager." She was the ONLY employee during my interaction who cared that I was served FLY EGGS in food. The manager approached and asked what the problem was. I explained the situation, and he did not care one BIT. FLY EGGS? I guess totally normal. He took my receipt and the crab I had put in a bag, then gave me a $13 refund. No "I’m sorry," no concern, just go about your day. When I, the customer, mentioned "those legs were in the case — other customers bought some," he didn’t even LOOK UP!! Why do I have more concern for customers, as a customer, than Safeway does? (See picture for fly eggs.) So in a not-so-very-short summary: This store is disgusting. The meat counter does not care if they serve you fly eggs, and will do so with an attitude. The manager won’t care about the eggs and will treat you indifferent. There are flies all over the vegetables, which management clearly doesn’t care about. It is a health hazard to eat from this store.
I have been shopping at the Fairwood Safeway store since 1990. It has terrific, fresh produce and meat. I only have to shop other stores when my favorite products run out of stock at this Safeway, which occurs frequently with Fage 0% Greek yogurt cups. Please stock a greater quantity of this yogurt. Thank you!
Well maintained amd well stocked grocery store with helpful and friendly staff. Has a wide selection of items. While there are several self checkout stations they are only for 15 items or less and there is usually only one or two full checkout lines open so it is always backed up.
This store use to be good. The remodel was a step backwards. Nonsensical store layout. Difficult to find anything. Shortage of shopping carts and baskets. There’s almost no smaller carts that older shoppers prefer. What few carts or baskets that they have are usually all placed at one entrance or the other. Leaving one entrance without any baskets and carts. I have mobility issues. It’s a big deal for me to walk to the opposite entrance to grab a cart. This Safeway store is the only local store of any kind that hires security to check receipts when exiting the store. In my opinion that money would be better spent on buying more carts (small and large) and baskets and hiring employees to insure they are located at both entrances of the store. This use to be my "go to store". Now I find myself driving past it to go elsewhere. It’s a sad decline to what had been a community stable.
I've been living in Fairwood over 10 years. This Safeway has gone way down hill. They consistently sell me rotten meat (well within expiration date but when you open it up it stinks). You can tell they leave it out too long before refrigerating... Most of the fruit is straight up moldy. Good luck trying to buy strawberries or something like that. Layout is nonsensical and they're constantly making changes which make their jobs easier at the detriment of customers. On top of the frustration with the poor quality food, they are constantly trying to trick you into paying more. Every single time I check out I have to have them adjust prices because the price at the register is higher than what was posted on the shelf. At this point I'm taking pictures on my phone of any discount because I inevitably have to pull at least a few up. It also seems that they try to sell food that's already turned or about to go bad as it benefits them to have people throw out food and rebuy it. Forget about pickup. They'll load you up with the closest to expiration food they can find.Something has changed with this company. It's one thing to raise prices, it's another to see your customers as an enemy to trick money out of. Also Albertsons (Safeway parent company) bought up the entire complex (both sides of petrovitsky) so we can never have a competing grocery store here. They embrace all of the terrible ideals of late stage capitalism. I'm done with Safeway, fred meyer, and Albertsons. Winco is another 10 minutes down the road.
I am writing this review to document a pattern of behavior that has made me feel profiled and intimidated while shopping at this location. On multiple occasions, the security alarm has sounded when I exited the store, regardless of whether I used self-checkout or a cashier, and despite having fully paid for my items. Each time, staff attention was immediately directed toward me, creating an uncomfortable and humiliating experience. What is most concerning is that this has happened repeatedly, not as a one-time technical issue. I have observed other customers exiting without issue, while I continue to be singled out. This pattern has made me feel unfairly targeted rather than supported as a paying customer. I expect retail environments to treat all customers with respect, dignity, and fairness. Repeated alarm activation and staff response directed at the same individual raises serious concerns about profiling and intimidation. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, reviews store procedures and security systems, and ensures that customers are not subjected to repeated distress without cause.
When it comes to grocery stores in Renton, this is a decent location with lots of options and a decent produce and meat department. I feel safe in this area, even at night. The parking lot could benefit from better lighting though. The inside is clean and organized for the most part. They recently reorganized the store, and some items are not where they used to be. I'm sure it'll be better soon. Most of the employees are friendly, others seem to lack motivation and/or would rather not be there. With that, keep in mind that this is union customer service, not Nordstrom. When it comes to pricing, this is not a place to come for cheap groceries in Renton. Coupons and the Safeway app are a life saver because many things overpriced in my opinion (to be fair, I am frugal). For this reason, I only shop at Safeway if I run out of something before my biweekly WinCo run. Once WinCo opens at the landing, fingers crossed, I probably won't shop here for groceries but I will continue to pick up my monthly $5 Friday fresh flowers - that's a great deal.
